- Summary expansion
- Commentary consists of the Elucubrationes of the Veronese humanist Domitizio Calderino, papal secretary under Sixtus IV, and professor of rhetoric at Rome where among his pupils were Aldus Manutius, Sabellicus, and Politian. Bonini's 1486 editions of Tibullus (Feb. 18), Propertius (Mar. 16), and Catullus (May 11), formed a sort of trilogy, and were probably intended for students of Latin style; see P. F. Grendler, Schooling in Renaissance Italy: literacy and learning, 1300-1600 (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins Univ. Press, 1989), in which Grendler discusses at length the uses and audiences for classical texts surrounded by commentary
