- The interview begins with Karenga's childhood in Maryland and the influence of his parents and family on the shaping of his life's mission; it continues through his move to Los Angeles and his time at UCLA. Major topics of discussion include his activism at UCLA and in the Los Angeles community, his philosophy about social change, his beliefs on cultural nationalism and Kawaida, the relationship between the Us organization and the Black Panthers, and efforts to develop a more racially inclusive curriculum

- Maulana Karenga was born on July 14, 1941 in Parsonsburg, Maryland. He received his BA (in 1963) and MA (in 1964) from UCLA, a Ph.D. (in 1976) from United States International University and another Ph.D. (in 1994) from University of Southern California. He has been a professor at various universities (mostly in California) since 1975 and has published in the area of African American and African studies since 1978. He is affiliated with a number of professional and community organizations and has received many awards over the years. Among his many accomplishments, Karenga is credited as being the creator of Kwanzaa.
