- Summary expansion
- The two main characters are the Abbot Martinengo, Guazzo, an artistic patron, and Figino, a Milanese painter, who debate whether the aim of painting is pleasure or utility. They finally agree that pleasure is only of secondary importance, and that art as a useful activity belongs to the Church, which should direct it towards the support of religion. Of particular interest is the 25-page discussion on the Milanese painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo, the "pittore fantastico," who is now finding new admirers; Arcimboldo's musical invention of the chromatic clavicembalo is also discussed
