- Biographical or historical data
- Born in Auckland, New Zealand of Irish parents, Leo T. McCarthy served California first as an assemblyman from 1962-1982, and then as Lieutenant Governor from 1983-1995. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1952, after which he enrolled in University of San Francisco, receiving a BA in history. He attended law school at night while working on political campaigns for Democrats, Phil Burton, Adlai Stevenson and Eugene McAteer. He married in 1955 and entered politics as an administrative assistant to McAteer in 1959. He served as Lt. Governor under Republican George Deukmejian in a time of bitter bipartisanship and political upheavel.
