As James A. Sandos points out in his article "Historic preservation and historical facts: Helen Hunt Jackson, Rancho Camulos, and Ramonana," California history 77, no. 3 (Fall 1998): 168-185: "...only the Monterey Edition contains the full complement of Sandham's illustrations, including two that show details of Camulos's architecturally distinct south portch discussed in the text, entitled 'When he played he sat on the upper step,' and 'Felipe, do you think Alessandro is dead?'" Furthermore, "Prayers, always prayers" was retitled 'He watched her as she walked away' in the Pasadena Edition; see footnote 19 of his article in "Notes [to the articles within this issue]," California history 77, no. 3 (Fall 1998), page 197
