- Farr discusses his education, both formal and informal, his wartime work in Puerto Rico, and his private legal practice in Monterey County. He gives a picture of the senate and senators during his service from 1955 to 1967, and discusses early environmental legislation to preserve state planning, and preserve Monterey Bay and Lake Tahoe; his support for legislation to outlaw the death penalty during the Caryl Chessman case; and legislation to aid agricultural workers and fishermen. He outlines his work as coordinator for highway beautification in the Lyndon Johnson Administration and as a member of the California Coastal Zone Conservation Commission

- Frederick (Fred) S. Farr was born in 1910 in Piedmont, Calif. where he received his early education; he graduated from UC Berkeley in 1932 and received his law degree there in 1935. In 1955, following many years as an attorney in San Francisco and Monterey, he was elected to the California State Senate from Monterey County, and was the first Democrat to represent Monterey County in 43 years. While in office he authored significant legislation for environmental protection, state planning, workers' protections, and in opposition to the death penalty. Following his defeat in 1967, he served for 2 years in the Lyndon Johnson Administration as national coordinator for highway beautification; he was also a member of the California Coastal Zone Conservation Commission (1972-79) and president of the California Historical Society (1974-76).
