Note
  • Some vols. have different imprint: (Paris : Publié par le Ministère de la Marine), with a variant title statement (Voyage de découvertes de la corvette l'Astrolabe, exécuté pendant les années 1826, 1827, 1828 et 1829 ...)
  • "The magnificent record of d'Urville's first circumnavigation as expedition commander, following his voyage with Duperrey in the Coquille, now renamed the Astrolabe in commemoration of La Pérouse's missing vessel ... during the three years cruise (1826-9) d'Urville spent 67 days (Jan./Mar. 1827) in New Zealand waters and ashore. From landfall near Cape Farewell he sailed into Tasman Bay, discovered French Pass and made most detailed coastal surveys around Cook Strait on his route up the East Coast to the Bay of Islands, exploring Hauraki Gulf. Apart from background references in vol. 1, vols. 2 & 3 deal almost entirely with New Zealand. Vol. 2 in addition to the journal-narrative of the visit, has a lengthy section on the Maoris (p. 387-573 ... vol. 3, under title, Pièces justificatives sur la Nouvell-Zélande, is an informed and judicious series of extracts from published material of Cook, De Surville, Crozet, the Missionary register (thoroughly scanned), etc. Much on Marsden, Kendall, Ruatara, Hongi and others." Cf. Bagnall
  • Early plans for these vols. showed that there would be 5 divisions: "1e division. Histoire du voyage (5 v. & 1 atlas). Météorologie, magnétisme, température de la mer (1 v.) -- 2e division. Botanique (1 v. & 1 atlas) -- 3e division. Zoologie (5 v. & 1 atlas) -- 4e division. Partie entomologique (1 v.) -- 5e division. Hydrographie. (1 v. & 1 atlas)". However, this plan changed in various ways during the course of publication; Bagnall accounts for 15 parts in 13 vols., not counting atlases
Accompanying material
8 atlases (7 v. : ill., charts ; 56-65 cm.)
Contents
[v. 1-5] Histoire du voyage. -- [v. 6] Observations nautiques, météorologiques, hydrographiques, et de physique (488, 85 p.). -- [v. 7, pt. 1] Botanique / par A. Lesson et A. Richard. (xvi, 376 p.). [v. 7, pt. 2] Botanique / par A. Richard. (lvi, 167 p.) -- [v. 8-11] Zoologie / par MM. Quoy et Gaimard -- [v. 12] pt. 1. Fauna entomologique. 1. pt., Lépidoptères / par Boisduval. (iv, 267 p.). [v. 12] pt. 2. Fauna entomologique. 2. pt., Coléoptères, et autres ordres / par Boisduval. (vii, 716 p.) -- [v. 13]. L'atlas botanique. ([pt.1] "Flore de la Nouvelle Zélande", 39 [i.e. 41] plates; [pt. 2.] "Sertum Astrolabi", 39 plates)
Dimensions
25-31 cm. +
Extent
15 pts. in 13 v.
Note
Spec. Coll. copy: The order of the vols. is locally-imposed, but all of them match Bagnall's account, with 2 atlases lacking (the one that accompanies Histoire du voyage and the 1st part of L'atlas zoologique.) All of the vols. had been re-bound, probably in the early to middle 1900s, in half maroon cloth and brown paper over boards, with the orig. red-dyed leather spines glued back on over the cloth spines. Labels on the orig. spines show that the vols. were originally owned by the Parisian club, Cercle des Chemins de fer (whose heyday was in the mid-1800s).
