Summary expansion
The death of Chitral's ruler in 1892 resulted in a period of political infighting and instability. Fearing the Russians would take advantage of an opportunity to extend their reach in central Asia, the British sent a force of 400 men to attempt to impose order; but they were quickly besieged in the fort by one of the local factions. Two further expeditions were then sent out to relieve them. The photographs in this book document the second of these expeditions, in which 15,000 men under Major-General Sir Robert Low crossed over the Lowari Pass from Peshawar to help secure the area. Included are images of the landscape, camps, bridges, fortifications, and both British and local forces
