Summary expansion
The engagement of Ferdinando and Christine had been formalized in October of 1588, and planning had begun for what would be an extravagant ceremonial reception of the bride and a month of pageantry and celebration during April and May 1589. The poem recounts Christine's entry into the Tuscan capital of Florence, the procession through magnificent triumphal arches designed to glorify the history of the houses of Loraine and Medici, and the lavish wedding celebrations arranged by Ferdinando, which included banquets, theater performances in the Uffizi Palace, a parade, tourney, and mock naval battle at the Pitti Palace, football game, and street masquerade. See James M. Saslow, The Medici wedding of 1589: Florentine festival as theatrum mundi (New Haven & London: Yale Univ. Press, 1996)
