  • Second issue of the first Aldine ed.; cf. UCLA Aldine press catalog. Second issue contains twelve leaves in gathering A, as described by Renouard (p. 36, no. 10), rather than eight, as in the first issue. The four extra leaves contain second t.p., with title "Exempla quatuor et viginti nuper inuenta ante caput de omnibus," Aldus's letter to Roberto Cuspiniano, dated April 1, 1503 in Venice, and 24 exempla. Cf. "The Valerius Maximus of 1502-1503," in New Aldine studies / by H.G. Fletcher (San Francisco : B.M. Rosenthal, 1988), p. 109-111

Coll. copy: brown calf over boards, elaborately decorated; enamelled black and gray-green borders, edged in gilt; large gilt mandorla centerpiece, decorated with arabesques in black and gray-green; matching gilt corner-pieces, decorated in black and gray-green; flat spine decorated all over with small gilt fleur-de-lys, trefoil, and quatrefoil ornaments; all edges gilt. Bookplates on front pastedown of André Hachette (red monogram "AH" above "Ex libris" in red); and Belgian book collector, Charles van der Elst ("Ex libris Charles V.D. Elst" encircled with laurel wreath). In modern beige cloth clamshell box; brown leather spine stamped all over with small gold fleur-de-lys, and gold-stamped title "Valerius Maximus. Dictorum et factorum."
