Summary expansion
The first 18 plates illustrate the shadow puppets or "wayang kulit"--typically depicted as "good" or "bad"--which are stencil-cut from buffalo hides, and mounted on hinged rods of bamboo or horn by means of which the puppeteer can move the puppets arms. . Puppets are held up behind a white cloth lit by an electric bulb or oil lamp so that shadows are cast on the screen. The remaining plates depict dancing girls performing ritual dances. As explained by Tyra Kleen, "...dancing is included in all sorts of Vayang. Javanese dancing is acting, and Vayang Orang--the drama performed by living human beings, with its extremely conventionalized movements, consist to a great extent of dancing. No line can be drawn between them: the two are identical and the word "Vayang" includes both. An exception from this rule is the Serimpie dance, which is pure dancing, and which is also different from the dances performed by public dancers who can be hired....[The ritual Serimpie dance survives today] only at the Kratons ("courts") belonging to the Sultans of the two small semi-autonomous empires of Soorakarta and Jokjakarta...in the centre of Java....These dances are performed by young girls of royal rank called "Serimpies"....there are also...Bedoyos [who are] grown up girls and women about the age of 13 to 25;" see "Serimpies," Ethnos 1, issue 5 (1936): 119-127, page 119. The dancers perform in the "Pendoppo," a covered pillared hall open on three sides where the Sunan watches the dancers from his throne, as they dance to the accompaniment of a gamelan orchestra (see illustration on page 5 of text volume). Kleen also describes the highly stylized costumes worn by the dancers as pictured in her drawings: a long brown batik sarong with a train that figures prominently in the dance movements, a broad silk sash tied in front with long fringed ends hanging down to the floor, a tight velvet bodice in colors such as dark green, red or purple, and either a helmet or diadem cut out of buffalo hide, gilded, and perforated with ornaments
