  • Uncle Tom's cabin originally appeared in the abolitionist newspaper The National Era, running as a serial between June 1851 and April 1852. It first appeared in book form, in two volumes, on March 20, 1852, in both brown cloth and wrappers. The first printing of 1000 copies was almost immediately sold out
  • Title vignette of Uncle Tom's cabin (repeated on upper and lower boards); includes six illustrations (three in each volume) by Hammatt Billings, engraved by Baker and Smith (illustrations signed "Baker-Smith")
  • Original publisher's brown net-grain cloth binding; each volume has blind-stamped border with ornamental corner-pieces, and large oval frame enclosing gilt-stamped vignette of Uncle Tom's cabin on upper board; on lower board, the vignette is blind-stamped
