Summary expansion
The book, one of the earliest photographically illustrated books in Chile, includes views of Lota, its prominent buildings, park, port, industries, and the nearby sea. The sleepy town of Lota on the southern coast of Chile developed rapidly after 1852, when industrialist Matías Cousiño started a coal mining enterprise. His portrait is the frontispiece of this book. The photographer was an early portrait and carte-de-visite photographer, with a studio in the Calle de los Huérfanos in Santiago. See H. Rodríguez Villegas, Fotógrafos en Chile durante el siglo XIX ([Santiago]: Centro Nacional del Patrimonio Fotográfico, 2001), page 134
