- Maulana Karenga was born on July 14, 1941 in Parsonsburg, Maryland. He received his BA (in 1963) and MA (in 1964) from UCLA, a Ph.D. (in 1976) from United States International University and another Ph.D. (in 1994) from University of Southern California. He has been a professor at various universities (mostly in California) since 1975 and has published in the area of African American and African studies since 1978. He is affiliated with a number of professional and community organizations and has received many awards over the years. Among his many accomplishments, Karenga is credited as being the creator of Kwanzaa.
