  • According to Steinitz (p. 165-168), this is the first ed. published in Italy and only two copies appear to be extant. However, later research indicates that the "1723 ed." was probably a "sophisticated copy" (or, forgery) made by Ricciardo himself, using leftover sheets from his 1733 ed., then back-dating it to 1723. Cf. Steele, Victoria. "The first Italian printing of Leonardo da Vinci's Treatise on Painting--1723 or 1733?" In: Notiziario Vinciano (no. 1, 1980): p. 3-24
