  • Etchings: illustrated with 14 etched leaves depicting in detail the parts of the instrument, and numerous settings in which the "radio latino" can be used to measure angles and distances, such as measuring the length of a river, height of a tower (without a ladder), or depth of a chasm
  • The UCLA copy contains 13 additional plates: three are present in two entirely different versions, and ten are present in two different states. Each trial plate is pasted to the blank verso of its published version. Three of the alternates are oblong in orientation, while the published versions are upright. Another trial plate is a different cutting of the same image, and the remaining nine plate-pairs exhibit minor differences. The pairing of plates clearly reveals the artistic choices and technical decisions made in the production of this 16th-century scientific book.

  • The note to readers, "A' lettori," by the Dominican Frate Ignazio Danti da Perugia, is dated August 26, 1583 in the Palazzo di Nostro Signore in Rome

According to E. Tomash and M.R. Williams, in The Erwin Tomash Library on the history of computing, the "radio latino" was "a complex sighting instrument composed of five hinged pieces with sights on each of the hinges. The central support was engraved with scales...which would permit sighting of angles between objects." Practical and portable, it served travelers, astronomers, navigators, cartographers, artillerists, and civil and military architects through the end of the 17th century. Orsini was a career military man who fought at Parma (1549) and Cyprus (1570), fortified the port of Souda, and governed the island of Crete. He apparently confided publication of his richly illustrated text to Ignazio Danti, himself an instrument maker as well as the cosmographer to Cosimo I de' Medici and to Pope Gregory XIII. Danti added extensive commentary on Orsini's text and saw it through the press following the author's death
