Note
Spec. Coll. copy: imperfect, first two parts wanting. UCLA volume signed Oo-Zz8 Aaa-Zz8 Aaaa-Kkkk8; first leaf of text, following unsigned title-page, is signed Oo4. Contemporary calf binding, identified by his unique tools as the work of Dominique Pinart, a French immigrant binder who was admitted bookseller in Oxford in 1574; covers paneled in blind with outer roll signed "GK" and fillet surrounds; rolls identified as Oldham MW.a(1)/Gibson XII and Oldham FP.g(9)/Gibson XVIII, and are illustrated in plate II of Ker, Pastedowns in Oxford Bindings with a Survey of Oxford Bindings c. 1515-1620. Ker (p. 210) identifies these two rolls at this date as belonging to Pinart. Both rolls had been separately used in the 1550s and early 1560s, and they appear to have come into Pinart's possession in 1581, after which they were regularly used together; five spine panels; endleaves are 14th- or 15th-century English manuscript waste, possibly from Oxford, containing text from the Sermones quadragesimales of Jacobus de Voragine, specifically for Saturday of the fourth week of Lent (these texts appear in the Venice 1575 edition of the Sermones on leaves 136r-138r). A detailed description of the manuscript leaves can be found in the descriptive catalog of the Rouse Manuscript Leaves & Bifolia Collection, available in Library Special Collections in the Charles E Young Research Library at UCLA. Large engraved armorial bookplate of the Bridgewater Library of the Earl of Ellesmere, signed by engraver C.W. Sherborn (1831-1912), and dated 1898. Purchase, Kenneth Karmiole, 2012.
