  • "Scripps first year students are required to read William Gibson's science fiction novel Pattern recognition as a preparation to discuss postmodernism. Gibson asserts that everything is pattern recognition. In this vein, students in the Typography and Book Arts class decided how they would define patterns. They wrote texts with the idea of presenting text as image, inspired by Iliazd, and image as readable text. In the process, they gave meaning to their pattern making. Kitty Maryatt."--Preliminary leaf
  • "Seven ... students worked tirelessly at the Scripps College Press on four vintage Vandercook presses to print this limited edition artists' book. For their prepared text, modeled after artist/publisher Iliazd, twelve point Centaur was chosen as the font. Several textured and watermarked papers were carefully selected as the substrate including Frankfurt Cream, Frankfurt White, and Nideggen, as well as multi-colored Thai paper. The book's striking images were printed from hand-carved linoleum blocks and magnesium relief engravings prepared by Pacific Photo Engraving. The hand-sewn, double accordian [sic]-fold binding was made by Cave Paper in Minneapolis, with delicate letterforms magically lifted in the vat from hand-printed seconds donated by Gerry Lange of Bieler Press."--Colophon, on preliminary leaf
