Note
  • Spec. Coll. copy volume I: 18th-century mottled calf, rebacked; fillets; gilt spine panels; gold-stamped red leather letterpiece with title "Shipley's Works I." Presentation inscription on front pastedown of Rev. William Davies Shipley, Dean of St. Asaph; ownership inscription on title page of George Washington. Laid in: 1 leaf of notes in a 19th- or early 20th-century feminine hand, possibly that of Mary B.H. Seaverns, containing biographical information on Rev. Shipley, and purchase information, noting that this work was bought at the sale of the library of Joseph J. Cooke in Dec. 1883. Another leaf of notes in the same hand references a work by Mrs. Judith Sargent Murray (1751-1820), probably her 3-volume book of plays and essays, The Gleaner, known to have been owned by George Washington. Apparently Mrs. Seaverns[?] had purchased both Washington's copy of Shipley's sermons and his copy of Murray's The Gleaner at the Cooke sale (nos. 2393 and 1031, respectively, in the sale catalog). In dark brown cloth phase box, in matching brown leather and brown marbled paper slipcase; gold-stamped spine title: "Shipley's Works. G. Washington's copy. 1792." Gift of Professor Emeritus and Mrs. Joseph A. Brandt.
  • Spec. Coll. copy volume II: 18th-century mottled calf; fillets; gilt spine panels; gold-stamped red leather letterpiece with title "Shipley's Works II." Ownership inscription on title page of G[eorge] Washington. Laid in: 1 typescript leaf containing same biographical and provenance information. Formerly owned by Mary B.H. Seaverns of Hartford, Conn., who gave it to D. Rodney Lee at the time of her death. Mr. Lee presented the book to Robert G. Brown in Los Angeles, California on Nov. 22, 1958. Gift of Robert G. Brown, 2013. For detailed information on the provenance of these volumes, see the report, laid in, which traces four centuries of ownership, from the 18th to the 21st century.
