The readers are based on the importance of teaching children to read through whole words framed in short sentences; using words that come from the child's own background and experience; controlling the nature and number of new words used on each page; and using books printed in bold, clear, well-spaced type, accompanied by closely-related illustrations. This reader introduces 149 new words, some of them quite large such as "pretended" and "aeroplane" and others quite small, like "to be." Included are 5 short stories, each with a list of questions at the end: [Let us go to the Mission], "Christmas Day," "The Man in the Moon," "Timtim Goes to School," and "The Flying Doctor;" illustrated with black line drawings
