In the first article, in his acceptance speech for the Livingstone Medal, Roosevelt summarized the expedition he and Colonel Candido Rondon made with members of the Brazilian Telegraphic Commission in 1914 to explore the source, length, and course of a previously unknown river flowing into the Madeira River in the Amazon region. The book reviewed by Roosevelt, The Andes of Southern Peru: geographical reconnaissance along the Seventy-third Meridian / by Isaiah Bowman. New York: Published for the American Geographical Society of New York by Henry Holt and Company, 1916, was based on the geographic work of the Yale Peruvian Expedition of 1911, and in particular the expedition along the seventy-third meridian under the direct lead of Dr. Isaiah Bowman
