Note
Spec. Coll. copy: bound in original calf backed oak boards of Bavarian or southern German origin, which belonged to an unidentified German student of humanistic interests who studied in Italy around 1490-1495, either at Bologna or Padua. The present volume was probably commissioned by the student upon his return home to Germany. His miniature arms are found on the last verso of the index, and his manuscript title on upper board. Calf portion of covers panelled with double rules in blind; spine with raised bands ruled in blind; stamped brass catches and clasps (one lacking). Contemporary manuscript annotations in a clear German hand, throughout text, featuring use of finely drawn pointing hands and proofreading marks, plus symbolic representations of concepts or persons in the text, such as a coat of arms, a candle, and a bar of musical notes. Index, laid in, is housed separately in a modern beige cloth phase box with gold-stamped tan leather title label "Index." Both book and index in modern tan leather and beige cloth clamshell box with gold-stamped spine title "Suetonius. Vitae XII Caesarum. 1493." Purchase, Bennett Gilbert, 1987.
