Summary expansion
The Balloon Route excursions were organized to promote ridership on the Los Angeles and Pacific Railway, which until 1904, did only a very small business. Under the direction of Mr. C.M. Pierce, the tours were created, marketed aggressively to tourists via local hotels, and became extremely popular, especially the Los Angeles Balloon Route Excursion, so named for the "balloon" shape of its route; often as many as 18 cars in one day would be called up. Passengers boarded the trolley cars at the Hill Street station, and began the all-day 101-mile excursion with a stop in Hollywood, followed by a visit to the studio of Paul DeLongpre, the world-famous flower painter. From there the tour went on to the Old Soldiers Home, where group photos were often taken on the steps of the dining hall. (The photographer would then return to his studio and print the photographs, and rejoin the group later with the finished prints that he would sell as souvenirs.) Other stops included the Long Wharf, the Camera Obscura of Santa Monica, Playa del Rey Pavilion for a fish dinner, and Redondo and Moonstone Beach. Passengers could search for moonstones on the beach before heading back north via Venice, and Palms
