Summary
Farquhar discusses his involvement with Sierra Club outings, his meeting with William E. Colby and his decision to leave the east coast to stay in California to be near Yosemite and the High Sierra. Major topics include his climb of Mt. Parnassus and attempt of Mt. Olympus in Greece, his return to the Sierra in 1914, the character of the club and its participants, changes in the club over the years, his involvement in major Sierra Club conservation campaigns, and his editorship of the Sierra Club bulletin
Biographical or historical data
Farquhar was born in Newton, Mass. on Dec. 31, 1887. He graduated from Harvard in 1909. Two years later he joined a Sierra Club outing and quickly learned the lore of the Sierra from such leaders as John Muir, Will Colby, and Little Joe LeConte. He became so enamored of California and its history that he would eventually become president of the California Historical Society. With his immense knowledge of the Sierra and the club, Farquhar edited the Sierra Club bulletin for 20 years. He served with distinction on the Sierra Club Board of Directors from 1924-1951 and twice served as club president (1933-35 and 1948-49). In his professional life, he was a successful accountant and served as president of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants and president of the State Board of Accountancy. He died in Berkeley, Calif. in 1974.
