- Biographical or historical data
- Hildebrand's active Sierra Club career spans over thirty years. He and his family joined the club in the early 1930s. He resigned as honorary vice-president in 1965 after an effort to curtail the activities of the club's executive director. He initiated the club's burro trips in 1938 and was instrumental in setting up the club's ski mountaineering program. In his professional career, he was dean of the College of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, awarded three doctorates and nearly a dozen other high honors in chemistry.
