Summary expansion
The two commentaries are from different times and represent quite different approaches, but were published together. Duran is noted for having produced some of the most important statements of his time against Christianity and Islam. In this work he concentrates on the simple meaning of the Jewish faith, for although educated in the Aristotelianism of Maimonides, he worked to "fix the boundaries of philosophical speculation to safeguard the principles of traditional Judaism" (Encyclopaedia Judaica). Duran was born and studied in Mallorca, where he lived until 1391 when, with many others, he fled to Algiers in the face of a massacre. Sforno on the other hand was an Italian humanist, with all the liberalism that that entailed. He studied in Rome where he qualified as a physician, and taught Hebrew to Johannes Reuchlin. "He aimed at inculcating a love for mankind in general and not just for fellow Jews" (Encyclopaedia Judaica)
