- Summary expansion
- Givens took up a job as post photographer at the Presidio of San Francisco in 1899. In 1900 he went to the Philippines to document the Philippine Insurrection, and produced the photos included here. The war photographs include scenes on the firing line, trench warfare, battlefield casualties, removal of wounded in horse carts, field hospitals, ambulance corps, executions, prisoners of war, prisons, American military camps Vicars, Corcuera, Pantar, and Mataling Falls, and the revolutionaries stronghold Fort San Pedro, which the Spaniards handed over to them after their defeat in 1898. Givens also includes photos of General Samuel Storrow Sumner with his troops, Governor William Howard Taft, civilian governor of the Philippines between 1901 and 1903, reviewing American troops, Philippine generals, the USS Boston, one of the ships in the fleet commanded by George Dewey, and the ruins of the Spanish flagship "Reina Cristina," destroyed by Dewey's fleet. There are also photographs of native peoples, including Moros and Igorots, and tribal leaders, views of typical dwellings, mostly bamboo and straw huts, scenes of daily activities such as plowing rice fields, woman washing clothes in the river, grinding sugar cane, fishing, the old Manila market, and native policemen. Six photos feature scenes from the Boxer Rebellion in China, and views of the cities of Canton and Peking. There is one photo from Japan of the feudal castle in Nagoya, and one photo from Cuba, the Morro Castle from the Isla de Cabras. Givens added four photos of California, including President McKinley's farewell to American soldiers at the Presidio in San Francisco; a view of Seal Rocks and Cliff House; Market Street showing Ferry Building and Goat Island; and entering San Francisco Bay through the Golden Gate strait
