Summary expansion
Of the four treatises and eleven letters, the most important is "De diuinis nominibus", a treatise in thirteen chapters explaining the Divine names. In "De caelesti hierarchia", the Pseudo-Areopagite presents the doctrine of the nine angelic choirs, arranged in three "triads", comprised of seraphim, cherubim, thrones, virtues, dominations, powers, principalities, archangels, and angels. The third treatise, "De ecclesiastica hierarchia", describes the hierarchy of the Church, with Christ as its head, and the mystical meanings of the sacred rites, ceremonies, institutions, and symbols of the Church. "De mystica theologia" concerns the mystical union with God, while the letters supplement the discussion of the major works. Although eleven letters are included, only ten were written by the Pseudo-Dionysius, the eleventh--addressed to Apollophanes--being a medieval forgery based on the seventh letter
