Summary expansion
In 1582, Tasso had published "Il Gonzaga Secondo," which contained a dialogue between his father, Bernardo Tasso, and Vincenzio Martelli, a Florentine poet. Bastiano de Rossi, in a letter to another Florentine, Flamminio Mannelli, accuses Tasso of falsifying Martelli's opinions and disparaging Florence, which was also Rossi's own native or adopted city. In support of his argument, he prints certain other letters, mostly by Martelli and the elder Tasso, and together all this correspondence forms the greater part of the volume. It is followed by Tasso's reply and then another of his "discorsi," concerning one of the "Ariostophiles." The collection is a sad example of the literary feuding which heralded a long period of decline in Italian literature. Another edition was published in 1586 in Ferrara by Vittorio Baldini for Giulio Vassalini
