  • Spec. Coll. copy: In contemporary, well-used and soiled vellum. With signature "Nich. Lanier" on t.p. and "Robert Hall 1794" on free end leaf. The first signature is very likely Nicholas Lanier (1588?-1666), who was English (with Italian heritage) and an excellent musician who became one of the King's musicians in the early 1600s. In his book, Appollo's Swan and Lyre, Crewdson, called him "The arch-priest of the masque in its finally-evolved form ..."(p. 79).
