Summary expansion
Pigafetta (not to be confused with the more famous Antonio) was a traveller, soldier and writer. For Sixtus V he was sent on embassies to various countries such as Egypt, Cyprus and England, and during such a mission he was caught in Paris in the siege of 1590. As a soldier he gives a most interesting eyewitness account of the military operations, including in his description the various problems suffered by the population; on page 67, for example, he lists the available food with prices. But the work is also valuable as a description of Paris and its surrounds. An octavio edition was published the same year
