Dark brown calf over wooden boards; spine bands restored; concentric blind-tooled borders on upper and lower covers; title and date "Liber historiarum 1566" on upper cover; two brass clasps and catches along fore-edges; gilt gauffered edges. Ms. notations on leaf 22 (numbered folium II) are dated 1565 and 1814. In modern beige cloth clamshell box with leather spine. Acquired for the Belt Library in Germany 1949, through Ludwig H. Heydenreich. Forms part of the Elmer Belt Library of Vinciana, gift of Dr. Elmer Belt, 1961.

Illustrated bookplate of James William Ellsworth on front pastedown, signed by E[dwin] D[avis] French 1895; ownership inkstamp in capital space on leaf 1 of the Capuchins' Convento de la Paciencia de Cristo of Madrid ("Ex bibliotheca Capuccinorum Patientiae Xp[Christ]i Matrit." In matching tan leather and light gray striped paper slipcase. Gift of Dr. E.E. Coleman.

Coll. copy (with call no. **A1.S31l c. 2, in 3 pts.): imperfect copy: lacks 1st and 5th leaves of the "Registrum" at front; also leaves VII, XII-XIII, CXLIX and CCLVIIII-CCLXI (blank except for headlines and foliation) and CCLXVII-CCXCIX, also 7 unnumbered leaves at end (the last blank) Leaves IIII, CI and CLXXVIII mutilated, half of text destroyed. Leaf VII supplied in manuscript. The work is bound in two parts, the second part beginning with leaf CXXIX; the 2d-4th leaves of the "Registrum" are incorrectly bound in at end of first part. Numerous headlines and foliation numbers cut away. The picture of, and text regarding, Pope Joan (leaf CLXIX verso) are obscured by paper pasted over them. Part three consists of: 30 stray leaves of Nuremberg chronicle stray pages. Portfolio containing leaves CXLIX, CCLXXII-CCLXXXV, CCLXXXVII-CCLXXXVIIII, CCXCI-CCXCVII and 5 unnumbered final leaves (De regno polonie et eius initio) all of which are missing from the copy described above. Also included are two photostats of leaf CLXIX, with woodcut portrait of Pope Joan: one is from the UCLA copy showing the mutilation, the other is from the William L. Clements Library copy at the Univ. of Michigan, showing the leaf in an unmutilated state. Parts 1 and 2 are bound in [19th-cent.?] tan mottled calf and mottled paper boards; gold-stamped spine title "Schedel. Hart: Cronicor."; edges sprinkled red. In modern dark gray cloth slipcases. Unbound leaves of Part 3 in modern dark gray cloth-covered phase box, in matching dark gray cloth slipcase.
