Summary expansion
Included are a history of the redwood logging industry, a detailed description of how the great trees are cut and felled, and Dr. Kellogg's essay on the relationship of the redwoods to other cedar trees. Photographs of loggers standing in front of redwood trunks--both standing trunks as well as stumps--document the enormous size of these magnificent trees. There are also photos of redwood forests, logging trains, a log boom, and the Gypsy steam engine and Donkey boiler used to move logs. One photo (no. 13) shows a Gypsy steam engine mounted on the front end of a locomotive so that the Gypsy could be operated using the locomotive's steam power. The publishers illustrated the text with photographs--"which cannot lie"--rather than engravings in order to leave no doubt of the enormous size of the redwoods
