Note
  • Caption title from beginning of text on recto of leaf 1
  • Range of dates suggested by handwriting, and by dates of 1664 (leaf 20r), 1665 (leaf 21r), and 1670 (leaf 26r) which are visible beneath lines of Leonardo's text. This dates the re-use of the same pages for the manuscript copy of the Trattato to after 1670
  • Script: written in a single clear and fluent, but not calligraphic hand. According to a letter to Kate Steinitz by Paul Bret, dated Oct. 8, 1954 in Domaine de Sainte Croix, Fréjus, France (laid in), the Leonardo scholar Carlo Pedretti noted that he recognized the handwriting, and suggested that the manuscript might possibly have been executed by Lodovico Antonio David (born 1648 in Lugano), a student of Ercole Procaccini in Milan, although that connection has never been verified
  • First [8] leaves and final [22] leaves are blank
  • Illustrations: includes 14 diagrams in ink, and 2 in pencil; picture spaces left in the size of Poussin type figures, 20 of them filled in with fine pencil drawings facing as in the engravings of the printed edition. The geometric diagrams have been drawn in a darker browner ink than that of the text. Leaves 96-104 at end contain a table of contents
  • Binding: late 17th- or early 18th-century mottled calf boards; gilt spine panels and fore-edges of boards; gold-stamped black leather spine label with title "Leonar. d'Vinc. Della pittura;" marbled endpapers; edges stained blue
  • Provenance: acquired by UCLA in June 1956 from the estate of Paul Bret in Paris. Paul Bret notes that he had purchased the manuscript in 1954 from a bookstore where it had been for the previous 19 years; see Steinitz
  • Laid in: letter (3 manuscript leaves) from Paul Bret to Kate Steinitz, dated Oct. 8, 1954, in which he recounts his meeting on Sept. 28, 1954 with Carlo Pedretti to discuss the manuscript, and in which he (Bret) provides a detailed description of the manuscript. Also laid in are four leaves of typed onionskin--clearly part of a larger document as they are numbered 5, 65, and 83--one of which contains description of the manuscript, "Manuscript Bret." The typed text was probably composed by Kate Steinitz for her Trattato bibliography, as one of the footnotes, addressed to "Mr. Olsen," is signed "K. St."
