Summary expansion
In the Prose, first issued in folio in 1525, Bembo convincingly extols the vernacular literature of Italy, sketches briefly its history and provides fundamental rules of composition. Bembo attempted to restore the Italian language to the clarity of Dante and Petrarch, at the same time advocating the imitation of writers of Golden Latinity. The first octavo edition is based on the second edition of 1538, issued as a quarto edition in Venice by Francesco Marcolini
