- Summary expansion
- On May 8, 1480, a Ragusan citizen, Nikola de Bizia appeared before the archbishop's court requesting that Maruša Bratosalijić, widow of goldsmith Antun Bratosalijić, and daughter of Jakov Butko, be present to state officially before all that she was Nikola's lawful wife. Nikola's claim was met by a counterclaim from another husband, Frano Menze, a non-noble descendant of one of the most distinguished patrician families of Dubrovnik. The first to become her spouse was Nikola, but the validity of his marriage rested upon the testimony of credible witnesses, whereupon the court might confirm his union as lawful. Maruša's father played an important role in the process, as he forced his daughter to marry his business associate Menze, threatening her with the deprivation of dowry and a future behind convent walls. Maruša's story reveals the complex problematics of medieval marriage, love and marriage, father-daughter relationships, betrothal and marriage practice in the Middle Ages, the clergy, the life of the upper rank of commoners to which all the protagonists belonged, and finally, of the city of Dubrovnik, a Mediterranean city of the late Middle Ages
