Summary expansion
Many of the postcards document the friendship between Miss Mabel Forbush of Boyle Heights, California, and Archie William Noel Porter, a student at the University of Southern California, class of 1908, who went on to obtain his Ph.D. from Iowa College in 1916, and his Doctor of Divinity degree in 1933. He later served as Episcopal bishop of the diocese of Northern California from 1933 to 1957. Porter, who signed the cards with his distinctive "A.W.N.P." monogram, faithfully corresponded with Mabel Forbush throughout his undergraduate years. The bulk of the remaining postcards are addressed to Mrs. W.G. Wells in Santa Ana, California, sent to her by friends and family members. Other recipients include Mrs. Samual T. Dolen of Bethel, Ohio, and Mrs. Inez Riley, also of Bethel. The postcards, many manufactured by the Newman Postcard Company, and the Haskell Postcard Emporium, include scenes of San Pedro, Long Beach, Santa Barbara, San Diego, San Bernardino, Whittier, Redlands, Pasadena, Los Angeles, Redondo Beach, Riverside, and Catalina Island. Northern California locales include Oakland, Berkeley, Sacramento, Yosemite, San Francisco, and San Jose. Some of the postcards are souvenirs of hotels such as the Raymond and the Green in Pasadena; Mission Inn in Riverside; Claremont Hotel in Berkeley, Hotel Lankershim in Los Angeles, and Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. Also represented are churches and missions of southern California, as well as the Bible Institute of Los Angeles building. There are postcards of popular parks such as Echo Park, Elysian Park, Westlake Park, and Hollenbeck Park in Los Angeles, and Piedmont Park in Oakland; and tourist destinations such as the Mt. Lowe railway, Cawston's Ostrich Farm, the glass bottom boat tour of Catalina Island, Casa Verdugo in Glendale, a popoular restaurant at the northern end of the Red Car line, and the redwoods of Mariposa Grove. Trees and flowers of California are presented in postcards of orange trees, acres of drying prunes near San Jose, eucalyptus and pepper trees, and golden poppies. Also included are six chromolithograic cartoon postcards illustrated by Hamish Duncan, sent by Archie Porter to Mabel Forbush
