  • Woodcuts: title vignette of Pius V [?] on papal throne, surrounded by bishops; below is large Giunta fleur-de-lys device in red, with printer's initials on either side, "L" and "A," repeated in colophon; full-page woodcut of the Crucifixion on verso of leaf [4], facing first page of text; text lavishly illustrated throughout with three half-page woodcuts (one at the head of each of the three main sections), and approximately 150 smaller woodcut vignettes depicting ceremonies and services administered by popes; liturgical music throughout consisting of square notation in black arranged on 4-line staves in red, with Latin words; large white foliated initials
  • Title-page printed in red and black; headings, initials, and liturgical instructions in red; liturgical text in black; printed in two columns, in large gothic type
  • Includes table of contents
  • UCLA Library copy contains extensive contemporary ms. annotations, in a single hand, of all the changes made in the liturgy of the Roman pontifical under Clement VIII, during whose papacy from 1592 to 1605, the revised edition of the Vulgate (begun under Sixtus V) was finished, and the Breviary, Missal, and Pontifical were all revised and corrected. Text in this copy, most probably used as copy for setting the authoritative edition of 1595, has been extensively edited and revised, with words, paragraphs, and entire sections crossed out and substitutions inserted in text and margins; four leaves have been mutilated, with some portions of text cut out (leaves 37, 142, 157, 228); 49 leaves have been completely excised from text or omitted in binding (leaves 34, 38-48, 78-86, 171-173, 181-184, 208-225, 229-231); two leaves of ms. text in Latin tipped in after leaf A2; one printed leaf containing prayer in Latin, with imprint: "Romae, Apud Impressores Camerales, 1593", also containing ms. deletions and additions.
