Summary expansion
Sangorski created the manuscript for the descendants of Sir John Tenniel, perhaps as a token of his esteem and respect for the family. The illustrations are enlarged reproductions of all of Tenniel's famous original drawings for "Alice," set within elaboratly ornamental illuminated borders. Sangorski also included full-page portraits of Lewis Carroll and Sir John Tenniel, as well as two original vignettes at the end. The binding, designed and executed by Arthur E. Calkin of the Riviere binding firm, and a nephew of Sir John Tenniel, features pictorial center medallions in colored leathers: Alice with the Dodo and the Gryphon on upper cover, and Alice and the Duchess on the lower cover. The borders surrounding the medallions feature gilt sprays and inlaid pink leather flowers, strapwork, smaller corner medallions containing characters from Wonderland, and Aces from a deck of playing cards. Even the doublures are special, featuring decorative borders and pictorial panels containing text and illustrations for the poem "You Are Old Father William." The 19 color photographs may have been taken in England during the 1990s [?[ by a bookdealer, binder, or former owner, and given to Ben and Lou Weinstein, proprietors of the Heritage Bookshop in Los Angeles, for their reference collection. They document the upper and lower covers of the manuscript, both doublures, spine, title page, both portrait leaves, a chapter leaf, selected full-page illustrations, and selected leaves of text. There is also a photograph of the calligraphic colophon leaf in red and black, signed by Alberto Sangorski
