Summary expansion
The album opens with views of Jaffa from the Mediterranean, the fortress, and the marketplace, and with a bird's-eye view of Ramleh from the tower, the minaret of the White Mosque, also known as the Tower of the Forty Martyrs. Photographs of Jerusalem depict the city wall at the Jaffa Gate, horse carriages standing in the street, a sign for Cooks (Thomas Cooks tours) visible above; Jews praying at the Wailing Wall on a Friday; the thick stone wall and pointed arched doorway of the Damascus Gate; the Mount of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Fountain of the Virgin, and the Pool of Siloam. Also pictured are exteriors and interiors of various churches and mosques such as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Church of the Nativity, Church of the Flagellation, Mosque of Omar (Dome of the Rock), and Mosque El-Aksa. There are also several pictures of Stations of the Cross throughout the city. Another series presents the tombs of Jehoshaphat, Absalom, Rachel, and the grotto of Jeremiah. The view of Bethlehem from David's well includes a grove of ancient olive trees in the foreground; the city's market is full of robed figures, camels, sheep and heaps of merchandise including blocks of stone in the background. Two photos document the grotto of the Nativity, the place of the manger where Christ was born. A group of Bedouin children watch a herd of cows on the plain outside Jericho. The Dead Sea and the River Jordan are also pictured. The final six photos are portraits of native Bedouins and Jews: a young Arab girl holding a basket; Bedouin men seated with their camels; an old Bedouin horseman with a long lance; a Bedouin family around their campfire, their tent of blankets in the background; three Jewish men with long beards and side locks in a Jerusalem street; and two young Bedouin mothers, each with a child on her shoulders
