Summary expansion
The photos appear to be a mix of personal amateur snapshots, and "official' military photos that have captions, stock numbers, and, in some cases, a signature. Three of the large photos are signed by Samuel M. Shera ("Shera"), a U.S. infantryman who may have also worked as a military photographer, and 28 others similar in format may also be Shera photos. Those depict scenes at the Olangapo base, such as target practice, skirmishing, Col. [Lincoln] Karmany inspecting troops, water torture of a Filipino prisoner by Marines captioned "Giving the watercure," and a row of Marine graves; as well as scenes of the U.S. Naval Station at Cavite showing sentries standing guard at the main gate; formations at a military parade; and the reading room of the Marines and Sailors Club. In Manila, there is a view of an enormous field of tents at the Carnival Military Camp. Six photos record the executions of Filipino insurgents by hanging, and the scene of human bones piled in a mass grave at Paco and the scene of American soldiers posing with the Moro dead after the battle of Bud Dajo on the island of Jolo, March 1906 attest to the atrocities that occurred during the Philippine American War. Other photos depicting life on the military base include servicemen practicing on the Maquahaya rifle range, mapping the Santa Rita River, clowning around with friends and pet dogs, dressing up in Japanese kimonos and sandals, and posing with the local Filipinos. The albums contain numerous photos of native people, including Negritos, in front of their "nipa" huts or stilt houses and bamboo huts and in the groves of coconut palms; roasting a whole pig for a Filipino feast; harvesting and pounding rice in mortars; driving water buffalo carts through the mud during rainy season; selling pastries, sweets, coconuts, and liquor at a native canteen; repairing the palm thatch roof of a typhoon-damaged house; children standing in a street in Subig watching the photographer. Also included are views of San Agustin Church in Manila, an old Spanish church and Fort San Felipe in Cavite; and views of the towns of Cavite and Olangapo
