Summary expansion
The couple clearly enjoyed some status in the American community in Tehran, as their scrapbooks include invitations to events at the American Embassy, the Ministry of Education, the Iran-America Relations Society, the United States Commission for Cultural Exchange Between Iran and the United States. Two of the four albums are labeled "Snapshots from Iran" and are filled with black and white snapshots, as well as some real photo postcards. The photos record street scenes and architecture, including mosques as well as modern apartment buildings in Tehran; the interior of a palace (likely one not open to the general public at that time); social functions at the Tehran Art School, the American Embassy, a film festival; the Baha'i Garden; exhibits at the ethnological museum, Tehran University; schools; foothills and rural areas outside Tehran, including shots of local people, farmers, craftsmen, and markets; visits to a beach, a ski resort, and the desert; and excursions to Shiraz, Isfahan, and the antiquities of Persepolis. The third album, labeled "Living in Iran," contains a few additional photographs, but is primarily a scrapbook of ephemera from the Bjorkquists' stay in Iran. It contains travel documents, camera and travel permits, theater and concert programs, invitations to social functions, stationery from the places the Bjorkquists stayed, and business or calling cards of friends in Tehran. Some material is in English, some in Persian. Many items make reference to the promotion of positive relations and cultural exchange between Iran and the United States. The fourth album, also a scrapbook, contains newspaper clippings from an unidentified English-language source, containing images of or text about various aspects of life in Iran, tickets for transportation and lodging, receipts for film developing and postage, list of incidental expenses while living in Tehran, more event invitations, list of books bought in Iran, holiday cards, and some English/Persian language exercises likely from the classes taught by Mr. Bjorkquist. The albums offer a glimpse into the life of Americans in Iran at a time when Iranian sentiment towards the United States was largely positive (that is, prior to the U.S.-backed overthrow of Mosaddegh in 1953), as well as a visual record of the landscape of Tehran and surrounding areas during a period of rapid development and modernization
