Summary expansion
The first four photos, including a two-part panorama of are possibly views of South Africa. Half of the photographs (25) are signed by the Adelphoi Zangaki studio, the firm of the brothers George and Constantine Zangaki, and include stock numbers and identifying captions in white along lower edges. Many of the Zangaki photographs are views of the Suez Canal between Port Said, the northern terminus on the Mediterranean, and Suez at the southern end where it connects to the Gulf of Suez and the Red Sea, including views of British ships docked at Port Said [?], the British troopship "Jumna" and the steamship "Orizaba" passing through the Canal, the quays and railroad station in Suez, and the lighthouse in the Amer Lakes, two lakes forming part of the Suez Canal system located just above Suez. At El Qantara (Kantara) on the western side of the Suez Canal in Ismailia, long caravans of camels carrying merchandise are seen crossing by ferry and by wooden bridge. Also included is an unsigned photograph of a bird's-eye map of the Suez Canal. Zangaki's Egyptian photos include shots of bulls along the Nile; two bulls working a "sahkieh" or water wheel to bring up fresh water from deep wells; the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Giza; a family of Egyptian peasants, "fellahs," standing in front of their mud brick house; and several large studio portraits of veiled Egyptian women, two young Egyptian boys, and a reclining young Egyptian man, richly dressed, and smoking a hookah, all posed with artificial background. The French photographer, Hippolyte Arnoux, active between 1869 and 1890 in Port Said, also documented the construction and operation of the Suez Canal, and produced studies of Egyptian types in response to the popularity of orientalism. In addition to his studio in Port Said, he maintained a sailing boat moored in the Canal, which served as a darkroom and as transportation for his equipment; his sailboat may be visible in one of the Zangaki photos of the Canal ("No. 28"). Arnoux photos include a view of a dredge excavating the Canal; the Qasr El Nil Bridge in Cairo, spanning the Nile; and a row of women filling water jugs at the edge of the Nile. One of the photographs, a view of fishermen aboard a native fishing boat in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is signed "C.A. Co." by the Colombo Apothecaries Co., originally established as a mercantile concern in 1883 in Colombo, and later expanded to include photography and photographic supplies. The photography studio was moved to Kandy in the 1890s for its better climate. According to the webpage of the Royal Commonwealth Society Photograph Collection of Cambridge University Library, "the company took the name 'Colombo Apothecaries Company' in 1892;" http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/rcs_photographers/entry.php?id=135
