Summary expansion
The photographs of "Russian types" are probably by the Scots photographer William Carrick, who established a studio in St. Petersburg in 1859, where he worked with his assistant, John Macgregor, a fellow Scotsman. The prints Carrick made of simple Russian people included horse carriage and sled drivers, milk peddlars, woodmen, and farmers. He seems to have been particularly interested in photographing people driving all types of carts--upholstered carriages, rough wooden farm carts, snow-covered sledges filled with hay, elegant sleds upholstered in velvet pulled by horses in decorative harnesses. He also photographed peasant women doing laundry in the river, three peasant women in babushkas pulling a large wooden cart, and a group of four young girls picking grapes or berries. The views of St Petersburg document the city in the 1870s, highlighting buildings and boats along the Neva, bridges such as the Nikolaevsky (Annunciation) Bridge, the Winter Palace, and St. Isaacs Cathedral. The shot of the Alexander Column (Aleksandrovskaya kolonna) is taken from the river; in the foreground, three men in a rowboat have their gaze fixed on something outside the frame of the photo, probably the photographer himself. The wealth and power of the Russian empire are apparent in the size and grandeur of these buildings. Views of Moscow include the Kremlin, Red Square, the onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral (Khram Vasilii︠a︡ Blazhennogo), Cathedral of Christ the Savior (Khram Khrista Spasiteli︠a︡) Cathedral of the Arcangel (Arkhangelʹskiĭ sobor), and the great Tsar Bell, missing a huge piece
