Summary expansion
The images document the lush landscape of the island, the cultivation of tea (in particular the "Groot Getas" tea plantation), coconuts, and cinchona (for quinine), and the daily life, customs, and architecture of the local people. The photographer has captured landscape images of the many waterfalls in Java--near Bandong, and along the Java River near Buitenzorg (Bogor); a stretch of the Solo River, a serene lake near Parakansalak, the canal in Batavia (Jakarta), and the Salak volcano. The Javanese villagers are pictured being ferried across the rivers on rafts poled by boatmen, sailing their junks, sampans, and skiffs, transporting produce on large ox carts in Preanger (West Java), playing in a gamelan ensemble, and selling their wares in the streets from baskets hung on poles laid across their shoulders. Their thatch-roof huts provide a stark contrast to the fine houses of the wealthy Dutch settlers in Batavia. Other villages or neighborhoods ("kampongs") pictured include Pasar Baru, a new market district in central Jakarta established in 1820; Tosari, a village high in the Tengger mountains in East Java, whose cool climate made it desirable as a vacation spot as well as a sanatorium beginning in the late 19th century (8 photos), and Empang and Cianjur in West Java. There are several photos of the botanic gardens in Buitenzorg, as well as a bamboo suspension bridge near Borobudur, and a wooden covered bridge near Tjiandjoer. Of special interest are the images of the ruins of a large Buddhist temple in Mendut, and the large temple of Borobudur with its elaborately carved relief panels (7 photos)
