Summary expansion
The album was probably compiled as a souvenir for the Western tourist of a trip to Egypt; the traveler could select photographs of his choice from a photographer's stock inventory, typically views of antiquities and "exotic" local life. Included here are views of such iconic antiquities of Egypt as the Great Sphinx and Pyramid of Cheops outside of Cairo; the Ramesseum in the now extinct city of Thebes, near Luxor; the columns of the great temple of Karnak; and the temples at Philae and Idfū. There are also two photos of the Aswan Dam, constructed between 1898 and 1902. Contemporary photos of Cairo include the celebrated Shepheard's Hotel, the bronze lion statues on the Gezirah Bridge; the equestrian statue of Ibrahim Pascha in Opera Square (Meidan El Opera); streets lined with shops; a panoramic view of the houses and mosques dotting the Cairo skyline; tombs of the caliphs, and an Arab cemetery. Several photos capture scenes of everyday life, such as fishermen and ferrymen sailing their traditional sailboats--feluccas--on the Nile; farmers irrigating their fields with water carried from the Nile with water wheels powered by oxen, or shadoufs; and men carrying water from the river in large animal skin bags. Also pictured are scenes of the sugar cane market in Luxor; mud houses surrounded by palm trees in an Arab village near Luxor; traditional homes in Luxor in which the second story was constructed as a "pigeonnier" or dovecote. Of the 56 photographs included in the album, 31 are signed: 12 by Sébah, 15 by Beato, and 4 by Peridis
