Summary expansion
The album, dated 1889, was probably compiled as a souvenir of a trip to Egypt by a German tourist, or perhaps, given its lavish and ornate decoration, intended as a gift to someone of importance. This type of travel album would contain photographs selected by the tourist from a photographer's stock inventory, typically views representative of the sights he encountered in his travels, especially antiquities, monuments, and "exotic" local life. Included here are views of such iconic antiquities of Egypt as the Great Sphinx and Pyramid of Cheops outside of Cairo; the Citadel; and many of the great mosques in the city, including the Mosque of Mohamet Ali, and the Mosque of Mahmud al Kurdi, interesting for its dome decorated in a new type of horizontal chevron pattern, the obelisk in Heliopolis, and the Colossus of Ramses in the now extinct city of Memphis, located near Giza. Other sights of Cairo recorded by Sébah include a view of the ancient canal known as "Khalig al-Misri" (which was filled in during an outbreak of cholera in 1896); the Ezbekieh (Azbakeya ) Gardens; and Shepheard's Hotel, Cairo's leading hotel frequented by Americans and British and French military officers. Also included are photos of a "dahabiya," a large often luxurious sailboat used for cruising the Nile River, a typical open air bazaar, a street vendor selling ceramic pots, camel caravans (including skeletons and corpses of dead camels in the desert), the richly carpeted and furnished interior of a room in an Arab apartment; and the traditional "shadoof" used by farmers to lift water from the Nile for irrigation. The compiler has also selected portraits of a group of "whirling dervishes," veiled Egyptian women in various poses, and an exotic Circassian woman (Circassian women, from the Northern Caucasus, were known for their beauty and spirit, and were considered desirable as concubines)
