Summary expansion
Following its defeat in the Spanish-American War in 1898, Spain was forced to cede the Philippines to the United States. Faced with an insurrection by Filipinos who were seeking independence from Spain, and then the United States, President McKinley immediately sent troops to Manila to maintain control. Hockenyos served in Company A of the 2nd Regiment, Oregon U.S. Volunteer Infantry, mustered in May 9, 1898, and his personal photo album documents his experiences in Manila during the fighting, including shots of the Calle Real Gate of the walled city of Manila which the Oregon troops enter on Aug. 13, 1898, where Spanish troops surrender, and the Cuartel de España to which the troops are removed the following day. The album also contains a photo of the Malate Bridge where Hockenyos' Company A was stationed. There are photos of American soldiers holding rifles, standing in the streets of Cavite? Manila?, views of trenches, embankments, and bamboo barricades in fields during the fighting; bodies of slain insurgents in trenches; groups of prisoners of war; and the railroad station at Caloocan on the Manila-Dagupan railroad, where the 2nd Regiment fought in trenches in March 1899, relieving the Twentieth Kansas, and train cars carrying troops, possibly the train captured from the Filipinos at Caloocan in April 1899
