Summary expansion
Conceivably the work of a press photographer, these images form a poignant and visual chronicle of significant events of the war. It is interesting to note that Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Joe Rosenthal was present during the war at all of the locations shown in this album, and at least two of the photos are conclusively his work. The album begins with 8 photographs of indigenous people of Papua Guinea. The remainder are primarily battle scenes taken in the Philippines and Guam, unfolding from the time of Japanese occupation in 1942 to liberation in 1945 by American troops. The photographer captures horrendous aftermath views, weary and injured soldiers, and lifeless bodies, including some of the atrocities that characterized Okinawa as the bloodiest battle of the Pacific War. In Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, a large banner expresses contempt towards the Japanese and references a Japanese assault on a group of American marines, possibly the "Goettge Patrol" tragedy which took place in August 1942. Aerial views show bombing on land and at sea, civilian villages, war camps, and Americans discharging supplies from numerous vessels at Leyte Beach. U.S. M4 Sherman tanks traverse jungles and seize control of villages, although frequently sank in sand or mud as pictured here. Rows of Boeing B-29 aircraft with military tents erected alongside them lay waiting for action at a Pacific airfield, possibly Northwest Airfield at Guam. When liberation arrives, two soldiers pose with four emaciated former prisoners and civilians walk through jungles with supplies to rebuild their homes and lives. At San Fabian, soldiers serving with the U.S. 6th Army 58th Signals Battalion are guarding the Bureau of Prisons POW Camp and also the Municipal Hall. Also included are images of Japanese prisoners taken on the isle of Okuku in Japan in June 1945, and the Japanese delegation arriving on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay to signed the surrender agreement on Sept. 2, 1945, headed by foreign minister Mamoru Shigemitsu, and army chief of staff General Yoshijiro Umezu. The album concludes with a copy of Rosenthal's iconic photo "Raising the flag on Iwo Jima."
