Summary expansion
The photos, probably shot by one of the pilots in the squadron, on base in Amman, and in Egypt, Trans-Jordan, Palestine, and an unspecified part of Africa, depict various types of aircraft--parked, in flight, flying in formation, and on the ground after crashing. Crashes documented include Sgt. McCheyne's crash at Amman, April 29, 1932; crash of a Vickers Victoria in the Sinai Desert in Sept. 1931; Flight Officer Eric Victor Bramley's 1932 crash at Gaza in which he and LAC Gerald William Moore were killed. Aircraft picture include the Fairey long range machine, Fairey III reconnaissance planes, and an Imperial Airways Handley Page HP-42. There is also a photo taken in Amman of the Sikorsky S-38 Amphibian, the "Silver Wings," in which American heiress Margery Durant, daughter of General Motors founder William "Billy" Durant, flew during the second of her "Air Popularization" tours through Europe, Middle East, and Africa between Dec. 1931 and May 1932, in her quest to popularize private air travel. A large number of the photos document military life on base with photos of sleeping quarters (mosquito nets included), and social activities such as the Whitsun celebrations, for which the airmen went all out, putting on tribal paint, and dressing up in costumes as jesters, gangsters (Al Capone), Wild West lawmen, Chinese opium smokers and fairies. They participated in many sporting events, including football played in blackface, a dog race, and nude diving, all to the accompaniment of the Arab Legion Band. Also included are some photos of archaeological sites such as Jerash, Amman, Cairo, Giza, Helwan, and Jerusalem. The photographer took photos of native people during a trip to Africa, including a group of four women carrying pots and jugs on their heads. Other local photos show views of the cities of Tel Aviv, Cairo, Jerusalem and Amman; an amphitheater at Jerash; ruins of a monastery in the desert dating from the time of the Crusades; a bridge in Wadi Zerka (Jordan) over the Zerka River; camel caravans; a native jeweler sitting cross-legged at work; a cloud of locusts in the sky over Amman; the Wailing Wall and the mosque of Omar (Temple Mount) in Jerusalem; Noozha Gardens in Alexandria (Egypt)
